Celebrating the Academy at 60: Gala Concert
Join the Academy of St Martin in the Fields and Music Director Joshua Bell to mark the orchestra’s 60th anniversary
With over 500 releases in a much-vaunted discography and the busiest international touring diary of any UK orchestra, the name and sound of the Academy is known and loved by classical audiences across the globe.
This celebration in the ensemble’s home city takes place sixty years since its first professional concert with legendary founder Sir Neville Marriner.
The programme, directed from the violin by current Music Director Joshua Bell, looks to the orchestra’s past, present and future.
Mozart’s Symphony No. 25, which famously features on the Academy’s soundtrack to the Oscar-winning film Amadeus, gives a nod to the ensemble's prestigious recording heritage.
Mendelssohn’s beloved Violin Concerto offers the chance to hear why American virtuoso Joshua Bell is one of the most celebrated violinists of his era.
The UK premiere of a new work by the Academy’s Composer in Residence Sally Beamish showcases the orchestra’s musicians as both soloists and ensemble players.
Completing the programme is Beethoven’s exhilarating Symphony No. 5, offering the chance to hear the Academy’s fresh interpretation of one of the most recognisable orchestral openings of all time.
