Berlioz Symphone Fantastique

Symphonie Fantastiqu.jpg

It’s Halloween! I thought I would feature one of the scariest pieces I have ever played the ‘Witches Sabbath’ from Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique. The Symphonie is about a gifted artist who poisoned himself with opium while in the depths of despair….cheery start. The last movement depicts a gathering of witches and other monsters dancing around a bubbling cauldron. The piece uses lots of orchestral effects. The sound of the dancing skeletons created by the string players hitting the strings with the back of their bows ( a very satisfying feeling….to just hit stuff.)  There are also echoes of the famous ‘Dies Irae’ and foreboding bells.
