Britten Billy Budd

I can honestly say I wasn’t a huge opera fan until I played this opera. Billy Budd is unusually an opera with an all male cast. The best operas always have a good story and this is no exception. Benjamin Britten's opera based on Herman Melville’s classic American tale, adapted into a libretto by English novelist E.M. Forster Billy Budd tells the story of the persecution and destruction of a pure-hearted sailor by a predatory master-at-arms. It's a tragedy  and a work that has captivated audiences around the world since its 1951 world premiere. It is not a cheery piece but to be fair most operas have a tragic element. (I will have a few cheery piece suggestions…promise)
